DentalDate is a startup company founded by a family of dentists to bring convenience and affordability to the world of dentistry. DentalDate achieves this mission by streamlining caller IDs, appointments, and patient reminders in one platform. DentalDate’s goal is to save time and money for both dentists and patients. 


PROBLEMS TO SOLVE

Previous marketing website
- When patients call in, dental offices have to spend a lot of time figuring out who they are by asking last name and date of birth. 
- Patients don't pick up phone calls.
- Patients miss appointments.
- Current marketing website out of date.
- 4 months duration to finish product design and marketing website.


User research

What information do you want to see the most when the patient calls in?
Caller ID
Name, age, gender, phone number, date of birth, balance, last visit, next visit, insurance.
Info
Important information including over due, family over due, if the patient owes dental office.
Notes
Relationship notes like patient's friend referred him, patient has a cute pet, or patient gave a 5 star review. 
Family
Patient's family members need to schedule appointments.

usability testing
"No, we are not there yet."    -- Stakeholder 
Before I handed off to developers, I proposed that we need to do usability testing. Here came this fantastic opportunity. DentalDate marketing team planned to go to ADA dental convention in San Francisco in early September, but our stakeholders said: "No, we are not there yet." 

As a designer, I understood that not everybody in the team knew how vital user-centered design was. But I thought it was the perfect time to do it. So I offered to come to help for free. Our stakeholders agreed. 

So I went to SF with my prototypes and saw our marketing team selling our product with a pdf document. I showed them the prototype and convinced our stakeholders again at the convention. I told them that online usability testing usually costs money, but it could be free at the convention with real users face to face. 

I'm glad I went even though I sneaked in with another employee's name tag. Not only because I got to do usability testing, but also brought the team the prototype, so we sold DentalDate to 50+ dental offices. ​​​​​​​

Here are the scenarios I prepared for the users:
S1: You pick up the phone and recognize the patient and tell him about the next appointment.
S2: You want to see all the appointments today.
S3: You are not on the phone call. Find Patient John Smith and text him.

1: How to go back? (After a while) Oh it is here. Home icon is hard to see. 
2: Can I add another patient here? (Click) It doesn't do anything. Plus icon should be removed.
3: Where is visit time? I don't see it. Make visit time more obvious.
